Who should do self treatment for depression?


This blog on self treatment for depression was inspired by a few of my patients. They asked me can we treat depression on our own? If yes, can you teach us how to do it? I am sure if you have come here to read this blog, you also might have the same thought process.


You also want to do self treatment for depression and do not want to indulge into any counselling or any other support system. I understand you want your privacy and it is important that in depression such privacy has to be maintained.


Before I answer your question I want to bring your attention to a very important aspect. If you observe the title of this section it says - who should do self treatment for depression, I have not used who can do self treatment. Once you read the following list you will understand why I said so.


  1. Break-up - If you are going through a breakup and are depressed, you should overcome depression on your own.

  2. Divorce - You might be in depression due to your divorce. This is the right time for you to start self treatment for depression.

  3. Toxic relationship - You might have been in a toxic relationship or are still in a toxic relationship which is causing you depression. You need to start self treatment for depression and anxiety.

  4. Loss of job - If you are unemployed or have lost your job, you should also start self help for depression.

When you do self treatment for depression, then it works as your recovery engine. Self treatment happens with self help and self help is always the best help. When you can help yourself overcome depression, you will be able to overcome depression using any other tools at 10x speed.

Now I want you to bring your full attention to this part of the blog. Most of my patients were in favour of no treatment. They came to me forcefully either by their family or friends or relatives.

  • Firmness - Once a firm decision is taken, you need to create a routine for yourself. In depression, the mind is like a wanderer and does not follow routines because the mind has taken a shift from being disciplined to being a wanderer. Hence, the only way is to create a routine and follow every step of the routine with sincerity.

  • Goals - Create small goals for your routine. Take small steps at a time.

  • Continuity - Stick to the routine for at least 45 days and observe what are the differences and changes or improvements you observe within yourself. Continue your routine with improvements until you are out of depression.


The key to following a routine is discipline. Missing even one aspect of your routine for a single day means that you are giving scope for depression to stay. If you miss even a day of your routine, you must start your routine cycle again. Maintain your regularity and you will see for yourself how you are coming out of depression.


Only you can help yourself to maintain your routine. Maintaining or breaking the routine depends completely on how much you are reliant on yourself. Hence, self help is the best help. Let us move forward and understand the benefits of self treatment for depression.
