In my counselling sessions I have dealt with more than 1000 cases of unemployment depression. Recently, I have had a few more cases of depression due to unemployment. Therefore, I thought let me share some basic understanding to all those who are unemployed and depressed.


Most of my patients used to say, “I am unemployed and depressed.” I completely understand that being unemployed is depressing for sure. My friend, do not worry. I am with you. I will help you to overcome your depression. Soon you will feel better. When you feel better you will surely find some job also.

First of all there is a difference between unemployment due to depression and unemployment depression. If you are depressed then it will drop your productivity. This will impact your professional work. No employer wants any depressed employee.


Therefore, such employees are fired. Now, this is called unemployment due to depression. You were depressed and hence you lost your job. But today we are going to discuss unemployment depression. It means that you are a graduate and still unemployed. Your unemployment is the main cause of your depression.

Before we discuss unemployment depression symptoms I want to tell you what depression is. My friend, depression is not a disease or illness. Yes you read it correctly. It is not a disease like diabetes or cancer. Depression is a mental condition. This condition can be rectified.

Body level symptoms

  • Fatigue

  • Tiredness

  • Lethargy

  • Low energy


Mind level symptoms

  • Stress

  • Overthinking

  • Negative thoughts

  • Boredom


Emotion level symptoms

  • Anxiety

  • Sadness

  • Hopeless

  • Worthless

One of my patients who was jobless feeling depressed, entered into a deep hopeless emotion. He was unable to come out of it at all. In fact this went on for more than 5 years. When he met me he said, “I am jobless for 5 years and feeling hopeless”.

Why unemployment causes depression?


To understand why unemployment causes depression, you must learn about the depression loop. Yes my friend, the mind operates on logical sequence. Hence, this sequence creates a loop.


It all begins with anxiety. When anxiety levels are increased it creates a lot of stress. Due to stress you enter into overthinking mode. Now you have completely entered into a negative thinking zone.


There are 10K thoughts that attack you. This attack maintains the loop of depression. Hence, after 3-4 weeks you will be hit with mild depression. I have observed in most cases especially in India people do not want to talk about depression.


There is a huge fear and insecurity when one enters depression. Hence, most of the people do not share with anyone about their depression. Especially when one is unemployed this becomes more heavy for them.


I have met many graduates who are in depression because of unemployment. If you look at the March 2023 unemployment rate in India it is 7.80%.



However, I have always suggested my patients that unemployment issue can be resolved if you work on 3 U’s:

  • Upgrade your skills

  • Update your knowledge base

  • Upscale your capacity


So before unemployment causes depression to you, I suggest you must bring this awareness that you are employable. You will soon get a better job. Losing hope will not give you any job. Hence, keep your hope alive.


Now let me explain to you who can recover from unemployment depression.


Who can recover from unemployment depression?


Whatever I am going to share with you is coming out of my real life experience counselling with 1000s of depression patients.


I have been with all my patients in their entire journey of overcoming depression and their unemployment status. All my patients who were unemployed and depressed were able to come out of depression. They also went back to their normal life with a new job.


However, I have a few tough cases which helped me to understand why they were not able to recover from depression.


So my friend, people who can recover from unemployment depression are those who:

  • Take a firm decision to come out of depression and stick to the decision

  • Shift from wishing zone to willingness zone to overcome depression

  • Start taking action to get rid of depression and continue action till they achieve the goal


These are the people who cannot recover from unemployment depression:

  • Have no willingness to overcome depression

  • Looking for shortcut to come out of depression

  • Take antidepressants without any health expert’s advice

There are 2 types of treatment of depression:

Rest assured depression is curable. What you need is the right tools, right guidance and your willpower. This is the right time to change your current status of jobless and depressed to being employed and happy.

Way #2 - Reducing anxiety and stress using positive affirmations

Now there are many studies available related to positive affirmations which confirms that it helps in coming out of depression. Affirmations have a very powerful impact on your mind especially when you are going through depression.


I have guided all my patients to use affirmations in 3 different ways - listening, reading and writing. This will increase your recovery process by at least at 10x speed. When you begin using affirmations you will observe its impact within a week's time. I have observed this kind of improvement in all my patients.


Positive affirmations directly help in reduction of anxiety and stress because they both are connected with negative thinking processes. When you constantly think negative thoughts that also is a kind of affirmation but it is called negative affirmations.


Therefore, whenever you have anxiety attacks during your depression, start using positive affirmations.
